Book Club: Blackberry Wine Q&A

Hello guys! How have you been? I have a confession to make…I’m loving Blackberry Wine so so much!!! I honestly can’t put it down, and I am so happy because, to be honest, this hasn’t happened to me in a while. For some reason, Joanne Harris really talks to me in a way few other authors do. And there is something so familiar to me in her style, that reading her books makes me feel as if I’ve just reencountered a long lost friend. I love the fact that the story takes place in the same French village as Chocolat did, and that each single word of hers is impregnated with such a unique sense of magic.

This Q&A will only focus on the first half of the novel. I will cover the rest of the book during our next Instagram Live Book Club Chat on the 8th of April at 6pm (GMT+1). Below, I have listed a few reading questions for you to answer regarding Blackberry Wine. They only cover the first 32 chapters of the book, so please, if you’ve read ahead, label your comment with a “SPOILER ALERT” note at the beginning.

  1. Which aspect of Jay’s life resonates with you the most?
  2. What fascinates you the most about Jay’s fresh start in Lansquenet?
  3. What role do you think Joe played, and maybe still keeps playing, in Jay’s life?

Here are my answers…

  1. Jay’s decision to leave his wealthy life behind to follow his artistic voice and needs, is probably the one element that resonates with me the most. It takes guts to make these kind of decisions, and although of course he is just a fictional character, he is addressing a sore tooth in the artists’ community. Aware that financial stability and high society were draining his creativity and his drive to write; he took a leap of hope to seek out new ideas to write his book, and I can only wish for him to find his voice.
  2. Lansquenet-sous-Tannes is just the perfect place for a new beginning. Each exquisitely described dull villager, exponentially empowers those mysterious characters wrapped up in ancient magic. It was like this in Chocolat, and it’s the same here too. I can’t wait till the day of confrontation between Jay and Marise; and there is something about her that screams Gilly to me…so I wonder if there is a thread to follow there too…
  3. I think that Joe was the greatest contributor in Jay’s life to learn how to tap into his instinctual self. He is a bit the archetypal unannounced mentor figure, which keeps guiding his pupil even from beyond the grave.

Now it’s your turn to answer these 3 questions in the comments below!

And don’t forget to mark your calendars that our next Instagram Live Book Club Chat will be on the 8th of April at 6pm (GMT+1)! I’ll fill you in on more details very soon. Just make sure you read to the end of the book by the end of March, and have a lovely beginning of Spring!
