Book Club: The Catcher in the Rye – Review & Live Book Club Chat

Hello guys! How have you been?

Welcome to my April’s Book Club challenge review of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye

I hope that everyone has managed to finish the book! I’ll admit that it was a bit of a marathon for me this time, as I had to read the last 100 pages all in one go… but, I proudly succeeded, and I’m now happily writing my thoughts on it for you.

It was an awesome book, don’t you agree? I really enjoyed reading it. It is definitely a page-turner. As some of you might know, I’m normally not a fan of book’s finales…however I did find this one basically perfect. I look forwards to discussing it with you on my next Instagram Live Book Club Chat on the 6th of May at 7.00 pm (GMT+1).

I was fascinated by Holden’s character. His naïve maturity, his witty curiosity, his unsatisfied spirit, and his craving for authenticity, make him the most amazing specimen of the best possible wandering troubled teenager. Every single one of his existential questions is relatable deeply within our souls. I can’t talk for every single human being of course, but I guess most of us shared Holden’s longing for truth and authenticity at some point in their life. A true masterpiece, I am happy I landed my hands on this Classic.

Has any of you identified some uncanny similarities between Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and the Netflix series The End of The F***ing World? Maybe it’s just in my head, or maybe not…and of course the plot is completely different, but the sharpness of the dialogues, the dryness of the monologues and the underlined existential craving for meaningful relationships, is definitely something strongly shared by all of the three teenagers (Holden, James and Alyssa).

Not even getting started on some of the mental murderous images somehow common to both Holden and James, and a few unpleasant episodes both teenage boys had to endure. Including, but not only, the loss of a loved one at such a young age. I won’t dig into details further, as I really don’t want to spoil neither the book nor the series for you guys…but I’m sure some of you will know what I am talking about…

Please share your thoughts on this in the comments below!

I do look forwards to chatting with you in our next Instagram Live Book Club Chat on the 6th of May!

One last thing, do you guys have any suggestions for our next Book Clubs?

Stay tuned to find out our next read!

Bye for now!

Love,

Elly, XO
